As a regular player on the Par 3 I have a few comments and suggestions.
1. RATE OF PLAY. As I mentioned in an earlier post there is a serious problem with slow play. It is not uncommon for often large groups to play very slowly, chat leisurely on the tees, fill in score cards and chat on the green before leaving it, and other similar things. All too often these groups will not have the courtesy to invite faster players behind to play through. I suggested a prominent notice at the first tee to address this but as far as I know it has not been considered by management.
2. LENGTH OF ROUGH. This is also a very large factor in the slow play problem, as a large amount of time can be spent, often fruitlessly, looking for balls in the rough, even at the edges ( and I do include myself here, I readily admit). For a course where directional accuracy is so very important, I feel much of the rough is far too long, especially close to fairways, and for me at least this detracts from the enjoyment of play.
3. DEDICATED CARD FOR PAR 3 COURSE. It would be very useful for both new and regular players to have a dedicated card for the Par 3 with lengths etc and also some simple rules of etiquette which may help with the problems mentioned earlier.
I would appreciate if these points could be considered. I do appreciate that the primary concern of the club is the main course but nevertheless the Par 3 is an important component and I fear it may be in danger of developing a 'pitch-and-putt' ethos.

Hi Mike
Thank you for your post.

Point 1: I agree the par 3 course needs better management and I have instructed the rangers to patrol this more regularly, however we need to encourage people into the sport so this will be done on a softly softly approach. The par 3 course was designed so non golfers and beginners could play at Sedlescombe without interrupting the flow on the main course but this has been very popular and may need rethinking. However more than 4 people to a group is not allowed.

Point 2: To obtain planning permission for the par 3 course we had to leave the rough uncut to promote wildlife. No checks have been made but I am aware of the planning regulations and do not want a slapped wrist by bending the rules.

Point 3: I have asked the pro shop to design a card for the par 3 course. I am waiting for this to be done.

James

Hi, James. I would like to thank you. Since the rough on the Par 3 has been recently cut down in many places I feel that it is a vast improvement both visually and for playing. I am sure others would agree. Thanks again. Mike
