It seems to me that there have been a large proportion of medal comps of late - when I was last looking, I counted 6 of the last 8 weekday comps as being medals. A lot of clubs have a 'monthly medal' although this seems a bit too far the other way. I know a lot of higher handicap players are put off playing in these comps because it is all too easy to ruin a round with a high score on one hole.

Someone (who will remain nameless) I played with recently was unfortunate enough to rack up a 13 on the first hole - you can imagine how much interest he had in completing his round.

I would have thought that maybe a fifty-fifty split between stableford and medal formats would be a fair compromise - what do you think?

Thanks

hi my view is we spend more than half the year playing stableford competions in my view medal play makes us all better golfers my reasons are simple

1. it makes you think about shots more ie should you lay up or go for it
2. see how low you can shoot and try to better it next time
3 it gives us low players more of a chance in the summer months

Paul,

Thanks for your feedback - you raise a good point about comps during the 'off-season' - I think there is no reason why we can't have more medal comps in the winter for all the reasons you give (they could always be off the yellow tees to encourage participation).

The main thrust of my post is my concern that a proportion of members are not putting their names down for medal comps which does nobody any good.

medal golf is golf.start at 1st tee see how many it takes to get to 18th hole. Can't understand why someone would not play a medal, don't we play this game for the enjoyment(?) of walking around a big field with some friends in the hope of possibly posting a score which is close to or better than our previous best.

Totally agree with you Chris. A lot of higher handicap players I know also don't want to enter the medal comps, myself included. I play off 23 and invariably will have at least 2 or 3 holes where total meltdown occurs, obviously Stableford allows me to complete but medal comps never work for me. I know we should all try to improve etc but I am now the wrong side of 50 and know I will always play roughly off my current handicap.

Thank you all for your posts.

I hope you all understand now how hard it is to keep members happy :)

We are looking into the Medal/Stableford mix but understand both sides.

James

Thanks for your support Dave - I too will always play roughly off my current handicap, actually I'll probably play roughly off any handicap :)

One way of getting satisfaction in life is to face a challenge and overcome it, there are many ways to skin a cat as i am testament too, i am one of the lower handicap players at the club(yes its true i bought it on-line.....www.buyalowhandicap.com). I can't hit it miles(195 average drive off the tee with roll) but i've worked out how to get it round. Fortunately i won't need these skills for the next month or two because the whingers have got there way and every comp for the foreseeable future will be a stableford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!well done. At least now you'll be able to compete or you could just grow a pair.

Don't think anybody was suggesting just Stableford, I was more thinking 50/50 would be fairer. I do see your point about trying to improve - trouble is I've been trying to do that for the last 20 years and whenever I play I always have some real nightmare holes, I doubt I would ever post a score that could compete at medal play.

It would be nice to see lots of different competitions IE' inter club match play advents for all members '' Texas scramble comps '' Team advents that involve all members not just the lowest handicaps'' Putting comps'''
Skills challenge comps'''
All of the above would create more members at the club witch would create more money being taken in food and drink witch possibly could mean lower bar prices for all?
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Lj :D
