Thanks to Mick. I have been doing a lot of reading both on the EGU web site and the congu rules and regulations regarding qualifying status of competitions.

It appears that the governing bodies would like all competitions wherever possible to be qualifying.

I would be interested to hear what the forum members think about the winter competitions being qualifying. The main exception wil be if we use temproary greens the competition wil be non qualifying.

Q4 The Club wish to run qualifying events using Temporary greens, is this permissible?
'Qualifying competitions can be played providing there are no more than two Temporary Greens in use and that the measured course does not alter by more than 100 yards. Normal size holes are also required, the use of ‘Bucket’ holes is in breach of the Rules of Golf and would render the event non-qualifying.'

hi robin,
personally i,d prefer the comps to be qualifying. However i think there comes a point with regards to the saturation of the course which was reached last weekend, when we had significant rainfall on fri/sat, which renders the course unplayable from a qualifying perspective. I say this because it is my understanding that the local winter rules that have been introduced, much like the bucket holes, would make any competition non-qualifying. I think that if the weather in the coming months is not excessively wet then qualifiers can be played, but we would have to revert to the egu rules( 6-inches/no relief in rough),which could be put in place for the competitions by informing each group as they get their cards.

Also think there are a few areas of the course which need to be cordoned off or GUR'd, mainly arond the greens where people enter and exit, which would hopefully benefit the course long term aswell.

Paul

Did you realise that the new winter rules make any competition non qualifying?

I agree with Mick. Its a very long time to wait for the next qualifier otherwise. I know that after a prolonged wet spell the course can get so muddy in places that it would not be appropriate to treat any comp as qualifying whatever the local rule is. However I'm sure we can all remember nice, crisp winter days when the course is just excellent and it would be a shame not to make use of those.

Anyway, isn't the idea of handicapping using the Competition Standard Scratch that it allows for dodgy course or weather conditions, it being the same for everyone ?
